For most use cases, High (192 DPI) is the safer choice — the files are larger but the quality is noticeably better when zooming or cropping. Only use Standard when you specifically need small file sizes for web upload, email attachments, or social media where large images are resized anyway.
JPG vs PNG — which format to choose
JPG (also written JPEG) and PNG are the two output formats available on Love2PDF. They produce different results for different content types.
JPG uses lossy compression. The codec discards some image data to reduce file size. For pages with photographs, gradients, and complex colour regions — scanned documents with background texture, photo-heavy annual reports, presentations with full-bleed images — JPG produces files 3 to 5 times smaller than PNG with minimal visible quality loss at 90% quality or above. JPG does not support transparency.
PNG uses lossless compression. Every pixel is preserved exactly. For pages with text, diagrams, charts, technical drawings, or sharp edges, PNG produces significantly sharper results than JPG — especially visible when the image is zoomed or printed. PNG files are larger than JPG but will not show compression artefacts around text or line art.
Rule of thumb: use JPG for scanned documents and pages with photographs. Use PNG for anything where text sharpness matters, including slides, technical drawings, forms, and any page you plan to zoom in on or print.
Page rendering vs image extraction — two different operations
"PDF to JPG" means two different things, and most tools only do one of them. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right tool for your task.
Page rendering — what Love2PDF does
Page rendering turns each page of a PDF into an image of that page — exactly as it looks when you view it. Text, graphics, layout, and any images on the page are all rendered together into one flat image per page. Image extraction — a different tool
Image extraction pulls out photographs or graphics that are embedded inside a PDF as separate objects. If a PDF contains five product photos, extraction gives you those five photos as separate files — not images of the pages they appear on. This is useful for recovering original photos from a PDF, but it is a different operation from page rendering.
