Merging PDF files on Love2PDF happens entirely inside your browser tab. When you drop your files into the tool, pdf-lib — a JavaScript library for reading and writing PDF documents — reads each file's page structure directly from your device memory. It copies the pages from each PDF into a new combined document without transmitting any data over the network. The merged file is built locally and downloads directly from your browser.
This matters because every other popular merge tool — iLovePDF, Smallpdf, Adobe online, PDF24 — uploads your files to a remote server for processing. Love2PDF does not. Your documents are never exposed to a third-party server, cannot be intercepted in transit, and are not retained in any database. What to do when merging fails
Merging fails for three predictable reasons. Here is how to fix each one.
Password-protected PDFs
Browser-based PDF tools cannot read encrypted content without the password. If one or more of your files is password-protected, the merge will fail or produce a corrupted output. Remove password protection from each file first, then merge. Most PDF viewers let you print to PDF without the password as a workaround — open the file, enter the password, then print to a new PDF.
Browser memory error on very large files
Merging happens in your browser's memory. If you are combining many large files simultaneously — for example, twenty 50MB scanned documents — the browser may run out of memory. Fix: merge in batches. Combine files 1-5 into a single PDF, then files 6-10, then use Merge PDF again to combine the batched results.
Corrupted or non-standard PDF files
Some PDFs have structural issues — missing cross-reference tables, invalid object streams, non-standard encodings. These cause pdf-lib to fail silently. If one specific file is causing the merge to fail, try opening it in your PDF viewer, printing it to a new PDF (File → Print → Save as PDF), and using the printed version. The print process re-renders the PDF cleanly.

The order you merge files determines the page sequence in the output. For professional documents, the correct order is not always obvious. Here are the conventions for the most common use cases.
Job applications
Cover letter first, CV second, portfolio or supporting documents last. The cover letter is the first thing the reviewer reads — it should be page one.
Legal filings
Main document first, then exhibits in the order they are referenced in the text. If your brief mentions Exhibit A, B, and C — Exhibit A comes immediately after the main document, then B, then C.
